WILL PUTUL PREMIERE AT CANNES 2024 HELP FILM REACH WIDER AUDIENCE? ‘YES AND NO’ SAYS ACTRESS MUMTAZ SORCAR | EXCLUSIVE

Indira Dhar Mukkherjee's Putul is premiering at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. The film, on the street children of India, boasts of a stellar cast including Tanushree Shankar, Koneenica Banerjee and the very talented Mumtaz Sorcar. And getting a film to one of the biggest cinematic stages in the world is no easy task. But, in the end, does having a film premiere at Cannes give it a wider audience elsewhere? In an exclusive interaction with Zoom, Mumtaz shared her thoughts.

In an exclusive interaction, when asked whether Putul premiering at Cannes 2024 will help film get a wider audience, Mumtaz, after careful consideration opined, "Yes and No." The actress went on to add, "It is very Catch 22."

Mumtaz elaborated, "The thing is, Cannes appreciating the work, giving it the respect it deserves, is huge. How many films can really go there? But the problem is that not everyone even knows the process of how a film is selected for a prestigious stage like Cannes."

According to the actress, very few are aware how difficult it is to reach there. "There will always be naysayers who will say we paid our way to go there. But money does not really make things work at such a grand stage. If it were so easy, so many filmmakers would have been featured at Cannes from India, over the years."

The actress is hopeful that the subject of the film is such that it will resonate with audiences globally, revealing how when the script was narrated to her, she herself felt an instant connect.

" When Indira Dhar Mukkherjee came to me with the script three years back, she narrated the story and when I heard the story, I felt the whole essence of it was so unique. It is a problem that we are still not able to solve and awareness is something we lack. It is not a problem that has not been noticed, but no one seems to be doing anything about it,” Mumtaz signed off.
