When OpenAI's ChatGPT debuted in November 2022, it got a lot of attention for its astonishing capabilities. Users eagerly tested the AI-powered chatbot, marvelling at its human-like responses to a wide range of questions. Meta, however, had been noticeably absent from the generative AI landscape until the unveiling of Meta AI during the Meta Connect 2023 event.
Recently, Meta AI became a part of WhatsApp and some users started getting access to the new chatbot in town. From availability of the new AI tool to the features that it offers, here is the full story in 5 points.Â
1. Meta AI launched
Meta AI, as mentioned already, was introduced last year during the Meta Connect 2023 event. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company's virtual assistant during the event. In a blog post, Meta noted, "Today at Connect, we introduced you to new AI experiences and features that can enhance your connections with others - and give you the tools to be more creative, expressive, and productive." Similar to other AI chatbots in the market including Google Bard and OpenAI's ChatGPT, Meta AI is a general-purpose AI assistant that can help users with a variety of tasks, such as answering questions, generating text, and translating languages. At the time of its launch, it was announced that Meta had partnered with Microsoft Bing so users could access real-time information and generate images.
2. Indian users get access
In November last year, several US users got access to the AI chatbot but Indian users were left behind. Earlier this month, several Indian users on X reported that they could use the Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp. As of now, Meta AI is in a trial phase and is gradually rolling out for more users. The chatbot is available only in English as Meta plans on gathering feedback and improving the tool to rollout the AI to a wider audience.Â
3. How to use Meta AI
To check if the chatbot available, users should confirm that their WhatsApp application is up-to-date. Once Meta AI is available, you will see a distinct round icon, coloured in shades of purple and blue, at the top of your chat interface. Clicking on this icon grants users entry to Meta AI, enabling them to pose queries, engage in interactions, and generate images through provided prompts. Whether in personal or group chats, individuals can initiate Meta AI's functionality by typing "@" followed by "Meta AI" in the message field.
4. Meta AI top features
Meta AI can be used in a number of scenarios. Want to plan a trip? Ask Meta AI for recommendations. Need to generate an image? Use Meta AI. Need help with research? Meta AI knows it all. These were just some of the examples when the AI assistant can be used.Â
5. Meta AI upgraded version
Last week, Meta unveiled an enhanced iteration of Meta AI, leveraging the company's state-of-the-art large language model, Llama 3. The upgraded Meta AI is tailored to assist users with enquiries across Meta's suite of applications and smart glasses. To streamline accessibility, Meta has integrated its AI assistant with the search functionalities of prominent apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, in addition to launching its dedicated websiteâmeta.ai.
"We're upgrading Meta AI with our new state-of-the-art Llama 3 AI model, which we're open sourcing. With this new model, we believe Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use," said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
