EX-GOOGLE EMPLOYEE SAYS HER VALUE WAS REDUCED TO AN ANNUAL RATING, CALLS HER TIME A MIX OF GOOD, BAD AND UGLY

Google laid off around 1200 employees in January this year due to restructuring. The company, in an email sent to affected employees, had said that it was a difficult decision for them and they were  carrying out restructuring at some facilities. The Sundar Pichai-led tech giant had cut jobs in several departments, including Google's hardware, and central engineering teams, as well as Google Assistant. At the time, Google had also confirmed that severance pay would be given to eligible employees. Google was also giving people the option to re-apply for the select opportunities that were available in other departments at the time. Many employees had then shared their side of the story on social media.

One such ex-Google employee, who worked for almost two years at the company before being fired, shared her experience in a recent LinkedIn post. The woman mentioned how her time at Google ended due to a small-scale layoff affecting approximately 1200 others. She added that even though the news wasn't entirely unexpected, it was disheartening to part ways with a talented team amidst cultural challenges. She also said that her tenure at Google, just shy of two years, was a mix of "the good, bad and ugly."

"In January, my time at Google came to an end due to a small-scale layoff that also affected approximately 1200 other Googlers. While the news wasn't completely unexpected (given the internal leadership issues and cultural failures we had experienced), it was still disheartening to part ways with a team of incredibly talented, experienced, motivated, and wonderful people that I had the privilege of working with. The irony lies in the fact that our entire organization, focused on implementing Creative AI infrastructure across all Google products and ecosystems, was cut amidst fierce competition in the AI-driven industry," she wrote.

The woman, in her post, also recalled how she felt that at times, her value was reduced to a performance rating or a job level.

"Going from consulting to startup ventures, and from the financial sector to cutting-edge technology, I have always strived to contribute to a more human-focused world through my work. However, as satisfying and lucrative as working for the MAN can be, again and again, working on the MAN's dreams took the central stage; my aspirations were overshadowed by the constant stream of quick launches, my purpose became lost in between the never-ending backlog requests, and my value was sometimes reduced to a job level or annual performance rating," she added.

Google isn't the only company that has carried out layoffs in the last few months. Companies like Tesla, Amazon, Intel and others have also laid off several employees.
