‘ENOUGH FOOD STOCK TO LAST A MONTH’: TRIPURA GOVT OFFICIALS AFTER LANDSLIDES IN ASSAM RESTRICT SUPPLIES

Despite restricted movement of trains in the Northeast region for the past two weeks due to landslides, which has affected transportation of goods and movement of passengers in Tripura, officials on Tuesday said Tripura has enough stock of food to last a month.

The landslides led to severe damage of railway tracks in Assam’s mountainous Dima Hasao district on April 25. The stretch is a part of the connecting link of South Assam, Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram.

Following the landslides, there is a restriction on movement of trains between Jatinga-Lumpur and New Harangajao stations under the Lumding division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

"Debris from the mudslides have been removed and the railway tracks that pass through the hilly areas have been partially repaired. Trains are currently operating only during the daytime while night services have been halted in the hilly route," a senior NFR engineer said.

He added that the railway personnel are monitoring the situation closely through eight watch towers. However, he said that the resumption of normal train services through Dima Hasao district is uncertain as railway tracks are yet to be fully restored.

Meanwhile, Tripura’s Food and Civil Supplies Department Director Nirmal Adhikari recently reviewed the situation during a meeting with the representatives of the Tripura Merchants' Association (TMA) and Tripura Wholesale Grocery Merchants' Association (TWGMA).

An official, on condition of anonymity, said that the state has food stock for nearly a month, however, the state government would discuss the issue at a higher level.

Earlier, on May 2, the Additional Secretary of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department put restrictions on the sale of petrol and diesel, eyeing the constraint on getting supplies amid restricted movement of trains. All kinds of vehicles, including two wheelers, would get petrol and diesel from petrol pumps in a stipulated quantity due to the restrictions.
