PATANJALI MD'S PLEA AGAINST MEDICAL ASSOCIATION CHIEF OVER REMARKS ON SUPREME COURT

The Patanjali Ayurved's MD Acharya Balkrishna filed a plea in the Supreme Court, and he sought action against Indian Medical Association (IMA) President Dr RV Asokan claiming that the latter had made disparaging remarks regarding the court's observation on the conduct of doctors.

WHAT DID IMA PRESIDENT SAY?

While talking to a news agency, IMA President Asokan said that it is very unfortunate that the Supreme Court has criticised the practice of IMA and private doctors.

The IMA President, in an interview, criticised the court's views, claiming it to be a broadside view that does not behove the court.

"It is unfortunate that the court has criticised private practitioners based on unclear statements, which has demoralised them," he said.

WHAT ACTION DID ACHARYA BALKRISHNA SEEK?

In the application, Balkrishna stated that the deliberate statements made by Asokan are a direct interference in the immediate proceedings and in the process of justice.

"These statements are condemnable in nature and a clear attempt to lower the dignity of this Honorable Court and the majesty of law in the eyes of the public," the plea reads seeking legal action against Asokan.

A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanudin Amanullah is scheduled to take up the case on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court is hearing a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) against Patanjali Ayurved's alleged dissemination of misleading advertisements.

AYUSH DEPARTMENT SHARES DATA ON MISLEADING ADVERTISEMENT

The Central Government's AYUSH Department filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court claiming that a total of 36,040 complaints have been registered since 2018.

"From 2018 till now, action has been taken against only 354 misleading advertisements.

The licencing authority has taken the maximum action against a total of 206 misleading advertisements in Rajasthan whereas Tamil Nadu has recorded the highest number of 4,230 cases," reads the affidavit filed in the supreme court.
