TAMIL NADU MP GANESHAMOORTHY, WHO ATTEMPTED SUICIDE OVER DENIAL OF LOK SABHA TICKET, DIES

Chennai: Days after attempting suicide, Erode MP A Ganeshamoorthy died without responding to the treatment at a private hospital in Coimbatore city on Thursday morning, a Times of India report said. His family had said he consumed pesticide after the MDMK party denied him a ticket to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The doctors at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) declared him dead at 5.05 am on Thursday and the body was sent to the government hospital at Perundurai in Erode for postmortem. Reports say he died of cardiac arrest.

One of the senior leaders in MDMK, Ganeshamoorthy contested from the Erode parliamentary seat on DMK's rising sun symbol in the 2019 general elections and won. As per the report, he was depressed after the party snubbed him for the upcoming polls.

Deeply stressed, Ganeshmoorthy consumed pesticide on Sunday (March 24) at his residence in Erode and was rushed to a private hospital. He was given primary aid and was later shifted to the KMCH. Here he died on Thursday morning.

The leader's body will be handed over to the family after the postmortem. Meanwhile, TOI reported, MDMK general secretary Vaiko and party leaders will visit the deceased leader's residence today afternoon.

Vaiku had visited Ganeshamoorthy in hospital on Sunday night and told reporters, "When our party functionaries suggested Durai Vaiko's name for parliamentary election, I did not accept it. So we conducted a poll and 99% wanted Durai Vaiko and Ganeshamoorthy to contest in the elections."

"We planned to field him in the upcoming assembly elections if he couldn't be fielded in the LS polls. However, he has taken an extreme step," Vaiko further added, quoted TOI.
