POLICE ACTIVATE AI-BASED FACIAL RECOGNITION SYSTEM IN J-K’S RAMBAN

The Jammu and Kashmir Police Friday installed an artificial intelligence-based facial recognition system near a tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district, officials said.

The system involves high-focus CCTV cameras that are integrated with a database containing the photographs of militants, overground workers and criminals. The cameras can screen the faces of people inside vehicles, and sound an alert to police in case a face matches a photograph.

The system, developed by a Chennai-based company, was first installed in Kishtwar district's Thathri — the entry point to the hilly district from Doda — in December.

The Navayuga checking plaza in Ramban district’s Banihal area, where it was activated Friday, is the second place after Kishtwar to get the technology.

The AI-based system is an integral part of smart policing initiatives, Ramban SSP Anuj Kumar said.

Earlier, officials said, police would would have to manually sift through footage from CCTV cameras installed at various places across the UT.

These cameras are capable of matching the photograph with the database even if a person is wearing a mask, police sources said.

They said the system will now be rolled out across the Union Territory.
