WOMAN FARM LABOURER’S SON CRACKS NDA, SET TO BECOME NAVY OFFICER

NEW DELHI: Shubham Narwal, the son of a woman farm labourer, is set to become the first Navy officer from his village in Rajasthan.

The journey to the National Defence Academy was not easy for Shubham, who lost his father to cancer in 2015. His mother, who never went to school, wanted her son to make it big in life. To realise her son’s dream, she worked as an MGNREGA farm labourer and also toiled in agricultural fields of others to run her family and educate her son.

Highlighting the case of Shubham Narwal, Major General Yash Mor (Retd), a Sena Medal winner and also a motivational speaker, said the boy set an example for other poor children who want to clear NDA.

“I hail from a village in Khetri tehsil in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. Jhunjhunu is considered the land of soldiers as many youths from this Rajasthan city have joined the armed forces. But I will become the first Navy officer from my village,” Shubham told Maj Gen Mor in an interview posted on social media.

Shubham said her mother is the real inspiration in his life. “She earns Rs 220 per day as an MGNREGA worker. After 100 days of work, she received a meagre Rs 22,000. So my mother worked in the fields of others to earn extra money to run our family of five members. I have three sisters. My mother got two of my sisters married off,” he said, adding, “we have just two acres of land but without water supply, it is useless. So my mother has to work as a farm labourer.”

“His mother is the actual hero of this success. I think such strong women make our society so resilient, my salute to her indomitable spirit,” Mor said. “My school was 15 km from my village. So, I used to board a bus daily to reach my school,” he said.

Unable to pay Rs 3,000 for SSB coaching, Shubham took an online course for getting guidance to crack the tough exam. “I worked on my personality and studied hard. As I did not have mobile data to buy, so I could not watch live classes, instead, I saw only recorded classes on mobile. I completed the NCERT syllabus and started giving mock tests to perfect my exam timing. I prepared physics, maths, geography subjects very well,” Shubham told Maj Gen Mor.

Shubham, who has never seen a sea in his lifetime, will now have to sail against the tide as a Navy officer.
