HARVEY WEINSTEIN MAKES COURTROOM RETURN IN HANDCUFFS AS RETRIAL IN RAPE CONVICTION BEGINS

Producer Harvey Weinstein, once a prominent figure in Hollywood, made a notable entrance at a Manhattan courtroom following the recent overturning of his rape conviction by the New York Court of Appeals. Handcuffed and clad in a new suit, Harvey Weinstein, previously observed in a wheelchair due to health issues, attracted attention as he confronted the prospect of a retrial.

Harvey Weinstein, presently serving a 23-year sentence for sexual assault, also faces a 16-year term from a separate California rape trial. Despite the overturned conviction, he remains incarcerated owing to the Los Angeles verdict. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office hinted at pursuing a retrial, while Harvey's legal team prepares for an appeal.

Jennifer Bonjean, Weinstein's attorney handling the California appeal, stressed the jury's prior assumption of his guilt based on the New York conviction. The recent revelation of its annulment could affect his California case. “At the time the jury was deciding the evidence in California, they were working under the assumption and the belief that he had properly been convicted in New York, Now we know that’s not true,” Jennifer Bonjean to Variety.

Harvey's courtroom appearance reignited public scrutiny, notably in the wake of the Court of Appeals' ruling. The panel cited judicial misconduct, including permitting testimony unrelated to the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, as grounds for overturning the conviction.
