7 years after Steve Smith took the help of the dressing room to review an on-field umpire call, MI have been accused of using the dressing room's help in a similar instance. During the IPL 2024 match between Punjab and Mumbai in Mullanpur, there were quite a few contentious calls as third umpire Nitin Menon was under pressure during the contest that went down to the wire, ending in a last-over thriller. Television footage of head coach Mark Boucher and batter Tim David, gesturing Suryakumar Yadav to review a wide call from the dugout has gone viral.Â

In the 15th over of the MI innings, Arshdeep Singh bowled a delivery away from the batter's arc and umpire Vineet Kulkarni did not give it a wide, taking into account batter Suryakumar's trigger movement toward the ball. Suryakumar seemingly did not review the call right after it was made, but a couple of seconds later, umpire Vineet can be seen sending the decision upstairs in the viral video.

Notably, PBKS's stand-in captain Sam Curran can even be seen arguing the on-field umpire's decision to send the decision to review in the viral video. Curran seems to be pointing toward the MI dug-out, apparently telling that the input came from outside the field.Â
The decision was eventually overturned with third umpire Nitin Menon giving it a wide as the marginal call went in favour of MI.
Notably, in the Bengaluru Test between India and Australia in 2017, Steve Smith was caught seeking the help of the Australian dressing room to review an LBW call. However, the on-field umpire did not allow the review and asked Smith to walk back to the pavilion. While Smith conceded that it was a rare 'brain fade', the incident led to animosity between the two sides after Virat Kohli stopped short of calling the former Australia captain a cheat.Â
ANOTHER MARGINAL CALL GOES MI WAY
It was not the only instance of a debatable call going in favour of MI on Thursday as the penultimate over saw another wide call overturned by the third umpire. This time, it was Tim David in the middle and he was facing PBKS's stand-in captain Sam Curran, who pushed the ball wide, taking it away from David's arc. The ball went marginally to the left of the wide guideline. However, third umpire Menon seemingly ignored David's initial movement toward the off-side. The ball was passing under David's bat, but the on-field call was overturned and it was given a wide.Â
WHAT DO THE REVIEW RULES SAY?
According to the ICC Rules, only a batter involved in a dismissal may request a Player Review of an Out decision and only the captain (or acting captain) of the fielding team may request a Player Review of a Not out decision.
The total time elapsed between the ball becoming dead and the review request being made shall be no
more than 15 seconds. The bowler's end umpire shall provide the relevant player with a prompt after 10
seconds if the request has not been made at that time and the player shall request the review immediately thereafter. If the on-field umpires believe that a request has not been made within the 15 second time limit, they shall decline the request for a Player Review.
No replays, either at normal speed or slow motion, shall be shown on a big screen to spectators until the 15 second time limit allowed for requesting a Player Review has elapsed.
MI SEAL THRILLER IN MULLANPUR
Thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's 53-ball 68 and cameos from Tilak Varma and Rohit Sharma, MI posted an above-par total of 192. PBKS slipped to 14 for 4 and then to 66 for 7, but young Ashutosh Sharma smashed 61 off just 29 balls, hitting 7 sixes to give the 5-time champions a huge scare. MI held their nerves to win the match by 9 runs and get off the bottom 3 in the points table.Â
