MANIKA BATRA'S SENSATIONAL RUN AT GRAND SMASH ENDS IN QUARTERFINALS

NEW DELHI: Manika Batra's remarkable journey at the Grand Smash tournament in Jeddah reached a bittersweet conclusion in the women's singles quarterfinals.

Despite her valiant efforts, she succumbed to a 1-4 defeat against Japan's Hina Hayata, marking the end of her historic run as the first Indian woman table tennis player to advance to the last eight stage of an elite WTT event.

Batra's campaign was highlighted by her stunning victory over world number two Wang Manyu in the second round, followed by a commanding triumph over Nina Mittelham, the world number 14. Her exceptional form continued as she swept past Mittelham with ease, showcasing her prowess on the table in a swift 22-minute encounter.

However, her momentum was halted by the formidable challenge posed by world No. 5 Hina Hayata. Despite a spirited effort, Batra fell short, bowing out with a final score of 11-7 6-11 4-11 11-13 2-11.

Batra's journey was emblematic of her resilience and skill, as she overcame hurdles and expectations to reach the quarterfinals. Despite her defeat, her historic achievements and unwavering determination continue to inspire the Indian table tennis community and fans worldwide.

Earlier, after beating Mittelham, the 28-year-old Batra said, "I'm feeling really proud of myself that I played my best game today after beating Wang Manyu. That match was really important to me and I was happy and excited so I had to keep myself calm for this match.

"Everything is going right here. Everything in my room, in my practice session, in my match; so I think I love this country! This is my first quarterfinals in a Smash so I'm really thankful to everyone that was there to cheer and my practice partner for coaching me and my coach in India."

Batra, who is currently ranked 39, is set to break into the top-25 following a memorable week here.

Batra had shocked China's Wang on Monday after getting past Romania's Andreea Dragoman in the first round, her first win at a Grand Smash event.
