WEATHER UPDATE: IMD ISSUES RED ALERT FOR EXTREME HEATWAVE CONDITIONS IN GANGETIC WEST BENGAL AND ODISHA, RAINFALL LIKELY OVER NORTHWEST INDIA

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for extreme heatwave conditions in Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha. These conditions are predicted to last for the next five days. Chances are that people may develop heat illness or get heat stroke in the coming days.

IMD’s Heatwave prediction for these states:

IMD has issued heatwave alerts for isolated pockets in Bihar, Jharkhand, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Interior Karnataka, and East Uttar Pradesh. West Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience the same weather conditions from today to April 29th and Konkan from April 27th to April 29th. As per IMD prediction, isolated pockets in Bihar, Jharkhand, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Interior Karnataka, and East Uttar Pradesh are also likely to face heat wave conditions during this period.

Meanwhile, a Western Disturbance, characterized as a cyclonic circulation is present over south Iran in the middle and upper tropospheric levels, and may induce a cyclonic circulation over West Rajasthan in the lower tropospheric levels today. Consequently, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and possibly hailstorms, is anticipated over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from today and will persist till April 28th.

Similarly, isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over Punjab from the 26th to the 28th of April, and over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on the 26th and 27th. Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh is also likely to experience similar weather conditions today. There is a probability of isolated hailstorms in Punjab and Haryana on the 26th and April 27th.

Temperature to watch for today:

As per the latest update by IMD, there is expected to be an increase of about 2°C in maximum temperatures across several parts of Northwest India over the next two days. Meanwhile, an upsurge of 2-3°C in maximum temperatures will likely occur over East India for the next three days, with no major variations expected further. The maximum temperatures over the rest of India are predicted to remain constant.
